    RFA Affirms the Safety of Mifepristone to Senate HELP Committee

    The Reproductive Freedom Alliance (RFA)–a nonpartisan coalition of 23 governors committed to protecting and expanding reproductive freedom–today submitted a statement for the record to the Chair and Ranking Member of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP). The statement is in connection with the HELP Committee hearing on medication abortion on January 14 and calls on lawmakers to reject politicized, non-peer reviewed claims that contradict decades of scientific evidence.

    “You can’t just turn this off and then turn it back on again,” Christina Chang, executive director of the US governors’ coalition Reproductive Freedom Alliance, said of the federal Medicaid funding.

    “The damage that is going to be done with even a temporary pause on reimbursement is going to have a lasting impact in terms of people’s access,” Chang said in an interview.

    The Reproductive Freedom Alliance — a nonpartisan coalition of 23 governors committed to protecting and expanding reproductive health care — today submitted a letter to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) urging Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Commissioner Makary to reject political interference and stand by decades of scientific evidence supporting mifepristone’s safety and effectiveness.

    New Mexico is the first state to promise free child care for all families

    New Mexico’s governor is promising universal free child care to families of all income levels.

    Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham announced her plans this week, saying she wants to leverage a financial windfall from oil and gas production to help more parents by removing the state’s income eligibility limit starting Nov. 1.

    The governors who signed the letter were members of the Reproductive Freedom Alliance, which describes itself as a nonpartisan coalition focused on protecting abortion services, including at the VA. “While the Department weighs its final decision, this joint letter underscores the commitment of governors to protect veterans and their families as the VA tries to put their care out of reach,” said Christina Chang, executive director of the Reproductive Freedom Alliance.

    RFA Governors Send Letter to VA Opposing Abortion Rule

    22 governors sent a joint letter to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) opposing a proposed rule that would strip veterans of the already limited access to abortion they have now in cases of rape, incest, and threats to health. The new proposed rule threatens the health and well-being of those who served our country by further limiting access only to cases where the patient’s life is threatened.  The rule’s ambiguity between the VA’s medical benefits package and the CHAMPVA program further creates confusion and the potential for patient harm. It also eliminates access to counseling entirely.

    Governor McKee signs legislation to expand Paid Family Leave in Rhode Island

    Governor Dan McKee was joined by bill sponsors and other local advocates for a ceremonial bill signing to mark the expansion of paid family leave in Rhode Island through the Temporary Caregiver Insurance program (TCI). The legislation will raise the Temporary Disability Insurance and TCI wage replacement rates from the current 60% to 70% starting in January 2027, followed by 75% in January 2028.

    “By expanding paid family leave, we are reinforcing the message that workers in Rhode Island should not have to choose between their paycheck and their family,” said Governor Dan McKee. “This expansion of the wage replacement rate helps us stay competitive and a national leader on this issue.”

    Gov. Meyer continues bill-signing streak, slate of healthcare bills gain final approval

    Governor Meyer signed a critical new law (HB 205) to protect healthcare providers delivering abortion care in the state. This means practitioners in Delaware cannot face legal action for abortion and reproductive services, fertility and IVF treatments, as well as gender-affirming care, which are all protected under Delaware law.

    Wisconsin Supreme Court Overturns 19th Century Abortion Ban

    A narrow majority of justices found that by regulating abortion, legislators had “impliedly repealed” the state’s near-total ban on the procedure. Dissenters called the ruling pure policymaking.

    “Thanks to our lawsuit, today’s decision affirms that access to reproductive healthcare will continue to be available, helping ensure Wisconsin women today are not forced to face firsthand what it’s like to live in a state that bans nearly all abortions, even in cases of rape and incest,” Gov. Tony Evers said in a statement.
