Governor Andy Beshear has been a vocal advocate for access to reproductive healthcare in Kentucky. He believes medical decisions should be made between women and their doctors, and he has been a fierce opponent of Kentucky’s extreme ban, which has no exceptions for rape, incest, or non-viable pregnancies. Governor Beshear has vetoed a 15-week abortion ban and vehemently opposed the Attorney General’s effort to access the private medical records of Kentucky women who leave the state for reproductive health care.
Governor Beshear vetoed House Bill 3, an extremist 15-week abortion ban that aims to effectively eliminate abortion access in the state. Although this bill was later enacted, as the state legislature overrode the gubernatorial veto, Governor Beshear fought to block this ban and has since worked tirelessly to expand exceptions to it.
The right way to make that decision is the way it used to be made under Roe v Wade - taking it out of the hands of politicians and ultimately allowing courts to balance access along with the most recent scientific evidence.
