    Gov. Pritzker Signs Bills to Fortify Reproductive Health Care in Illinois

    Gov. Pritzker signed an expanded state shield law (HB3637) protecting health care providers from discipline for providing health care services that are lawful in Illinois, and HB3709 which requires public colleges and universities to offer contraception and medication abortion if they have an on-campus pharmacy or student health center.

    Governor McKee signs bill lifting contraception prescription limits, expanding access

    Rhode Island Governor McKee has signed a bill that removes the 3-month supply limit on contraceptives prescribed by pharmacists. Previously, patients could only receive and have insurance cover up to a 3-month supply at a time. The new law allows for a longer supply to be dispensed and expands insurance coverage accordingly, improving access to pharmacist-prescribed birth control.

    The bills covered a range of policy changes intended to expand access to reproductive health care. Of these bills, House Bills 5435 and 5436 aim to increase access to contraceptives specifically by allowing pharmacists to prescribe and dispense birth control and mandating coverage for these contraceptives by insurance providers.

    Reproductive Health Policy Workgroup

    The Oregon Health Authority (OHA) established a Reproductive Health Policy Workgroup to provide a coordinated, equity-centered, and comprehensive approach to advancing reproductive health goals in Oregon. Composed of representatives from a diverse set of programs and divisions within the agency, as well as agencies whose work impacts reproductive health, the workgroup provided input and coordinated on efforts related to reproductive health and autonomy from a holistic and intersectional perspective.

    Reproductive Health Infrastructure Investments

    Oregon allocated $3.4 million dollars to the Oregon Health Authority (OHA) as part of Public Health Modernization to support reproductive health infrastructure development. This funding created a state-wide abortion access website, provided OHA-wide reproductive health services reimbursement rate revisions and alignment, and provided infrastructure grants to service providers across the state.

    Due to legislation secured by Governor Hochul, New York’s Health Commissioner signed a standing order authorizing pharmacists to dispense three categories of hormonal contraception medication without a prescription, making it easier for people who have difficulty accessing a primary care provider to get safe and effective contraception at their local pharmacy.
