Statement from the Reproductive Freedom Alliance on the Anniversary of the Dobbs v. Jackson
Three years ago, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, stripping away the constitutional right to abortion and putting the responsibility of protecting reproductive freedom squarely on the shoulders of states.
In the absence of federal protections, states have become the last line of defense. While some have chosen to strip away rights and endanger lives, the 23 governors that make up the Reproductive Freedom Alliance are choosing a different path: one grounded in science, compassion, and the fundamental belief that everyone should have the freedom to make decisions about their own body.
Together, Alliance governors have fortified shield laws to protect patients and providers from out-of-state prosecution, invested in stockpiles and other strategies to protect access to medication abortion, and passed new laws to safeguard reproductive health data. We’ve worked to lower costs and increase access to contraception, and we’re building a stronger, more protected reproductive health workforce to serve the growing number of people forced to travel for care.
But our work is not over.
Three years after Dobbs, the stakes have never been higher. As anti-abortion extremists double down on their efforts to erode the reproductive care infrastructure that states have worked to protect and expand since the fall of Roe, we will continue to step up.
We know our role in this moment. Alliance governors will continue to act with urgency and do everything in our power to ensure reproductive health care is available, affordable, and safe—and that every person has the freedom and autonomy to control their own body, no matter what comes next.
