Reproductive Freedom Alliance Urges FDA to Uphold Science on Mifepristone

The Reproductive Freedom Alliance — a nonpartisan coalition of 23 governors committed to protecting and expanding reproductive health care — today (10/14/25) submitted a letter to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) urging Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Commissioner Makary to reject political interference and stand by decades of scientific evidence supporting mifepristone’s safety and effectiveness.

The Alliance’s letter comes in response to recent requests by Republican Attorneys General and some Senators to Secretary Kennedy and Commissioner Makary to publicly commit to reviewing mifepristone’s FDA approval.

“The FDA’s approval of mifepristone is backed by decades of rigorous scientific review and extensive real-world evidence showing it is safe and effective,” said Christina Chang, Executive Director of the Reproductive Freedom Alliance. “We urge the agency to stand by that careful, science-based analysis and uphold its core mission to protect and improve public health through accurate, evidence-driven decision-making — not political pressure.”

Mifepristone has been approved for use in the United States for more than two decades and remains a critical component of reproductive health care.
