Governor Abigail Spanberger is a proven champion for reproductive freedom. Since becoming Governor, she has signed the Right to Contraception Act into law, ensuring that Virginians have the right to access birth control and other contraceptives without government interference. She also signed a slate of bills as part of a “Momnibus” package to address maternal health disparities and increase support for new parents.
During her tenure in Congress, Spanberger fought to codify Roe v. Wade, protect access to birth control and IVF, and defend interstate travel for reproductive care. She voted twice in favor of the Women’s Health Protection Act to codify abortion rights, supported the Ensuring Access Abortion Act, and voted to codify the right to birth control into federal law.
Below is a non-exhaustive list of key actions taken in Virginia to protect and expand reproductive freedom since the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.
“Virginia is the only state in the South where a woman has the same freedom to make her own healthcare decisions as she did before the fall of Roe v. Wade. Today, we are taking a step to reaffirm those freedoms. As part of the Reproductive Freedom Alliance, I will continue doing everything in my power to preserve the rights of Virginians seeking reproductive care and making sure families across our Commonwealth can continue making their own personal healthcare decisions.”
